PLANTS
6
"Water Conservation Tool #1"
  • Water Conservation Tool #1 - Plants:
  • Plant water-wise perennial plants.  They come back every year, save money, and save water.  They also bring beauty to every landscape.  The following pictures are a few examples of the many plants you will find in our Garden.

Daylily
(Hemerocallis ‘Stella de Oro’)

11
Shasta Daisy
(Leucanthemum x superbum)
12
"Water Conservation Tool #2"
  • Water Conservation Tool #2 - Plant Care and Maintenance:

  • Install a drip irrigation system in flower beds for optimum watering.  Use mulch around all plants to maintain moistness and prevent weeds.
13
Johnson’s Blue
Geranium
(Geranium ibericum)
14
Black Eyed Susan
(Rudbeckia hirta)

Columbine
(Aquilegia Vulgaris)

"Water Conservation Tool #3-6..."

  • Water Conservation Tool #3-6 Steps to Water Wise Landscaping:
  • Plan your yard or individual plantings
  • Analyze the soil
  • Use plants that are appropriate for your soil and our climate
  • Use turf practically- it can use a lot of water, i.e. if it only gets walked on to be mowed, you may want to plant something else in that area; don’t plant turf in narrow or odd shaped areas
  • Install an efficient irrigation system or use your existing one efficiently.  (a Water Check will help with efficiency, please see Free Water Check link under Conservation)
  • Maintain it regularly

WATER-WISE TURF
19
"Water Conservation Tool #4"
  • Water Conservation Tool #4 - Water Wise Turf:
  • Water-wise turf is a beautiful way to save water.  It uses less water than traditional Kentucky Blue Grass and looks just as good.  The following slides show the four examples of water-wise turf in our Garden.

WATERING

"Water Conservation Tool #5-Watering..."

  • Water Conservation Tool #5-Watering Tips:

  • Do not water between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.  Up to 25% water loss occurs due to evaporation in the heat of the day.
  • Repair broken, leaky, or malfunctioning sprinkler heads and pipes.
  • Adjust misaligned sprinkler heads to water only landscaped areas.
  • Avoid run-off onto sidewalks or gutters due to over watering.
  • When it rains, shut-off your sprinkling system for a few days
  • Adjust your watering schedule according to the season.
  • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean debris off of driveways and sidewalks
  • Use a shut-off nozzle on the hose when you wash your car.
  • Hand water dry spots.
  • Adequately fertilize the lawn to keep it healthy.

ALTERNATIVE LANDSCAPING
27
"Water Conservation Tool #6-Use..."
  • Water Conservation Tool #6-Use of Alternative Landscaping:
  • Try landscaping with rocks and water-wise plantings to cut down on turf areas.  The following slides show examples such as a dry river bed with grasses and perennial plants and various rock/plant settings.  They look beautiful, bring change, and, a different dimension to the landscape.
